Lecture & Book Signing with Karen Winter Schwartz
December Lecture with Author, Karen Winter Schwartz
On December 5, 2013 the International Bipolar Foundation will have their free mental health lecture series and book signing with Author, Karen Winters Schwartz.
Karen is an active board member of NAMI Syracuse and has traveled throughout the country advocating for mental illness awareness. Where Are the Cocoa Puffs?: A Family’s Journey Through Bipolar Disorder is her debut novel which was released September of 2010. Her second novel: Reis’s Pieces: Love, Loss, and Schizophrenia was released May 2012. Among her numerous family members who have dealt with some sort of neurobiological brain disorder are her two beautiful daughters, both of whom struggled greatly as adolescents, both of whom were labeled with an axis I diagnosis, one with bipolar, the other with schizophrenia. They are both now in recovery and doing wonderfully.
Mental illness may begin with the individual, but it ultimately affects families and communities. These effects are partly due to stigma stemming from ignorance and fear. Karen Winters Schwartz will discuss the derailment of her own family by mental illness, and how her ignorance and the lack of support made the journey to recovery more difficult. She’ll share her thoughts on decreasing stigma, increasing education, and eliciting empathy—thus smoothing out the road to recovery.
Karen provides a unique perspective as a mother who, because of her biases and ignorance, was totally blindsided by her daughters’ mental illnesses. She shares what was needed to turn her feelings of isolation and helplessness into hope and recovery—for herself and for her entire family. She will discuss the root of our biases, fear, and stigma. She will offer insight on what is needed to let go of parental guilt and move into advocacy.
Karen will also share what moved her to write novels that humanize individuals with mental illness. Through literature, she hopes to educate while entertaining, elicit empathy while telling a great story, and advocate by reaching those who just don’t “get it.”
